THROWS AND TAKEDOWNS

An enemy who is on the ground is a far lesser threat than one who is standing up. In a military context, downed opponents are often finished off with a soldier’s boots, but this is not always desirable in self-defence. If an opponent hits the ground hard enough, he can be taken out of the fight. A hard fall can result in winding, and an awkward one can break bones.

Care must be taken when training in throws and takedowns. It is strongly advisable to join a Ju-Jitsu, Judo or Mixed Martial Arts class if you wish to learn to use throws. They require a fair amount of practice to be useful, and should be trained only under qualified supervision. Particular care must be taken to avoid hard contact between a student’s head and the ground.

Straight and roundhouse knee strikes

As a general rule you should not try to knee someone unless you have hold of them. A straight strike is launched by simply raising your knee into the target.

A roundhouse knee follows a similar path to a roundhouse kick, curving into the target from the side.
